and Marvin Way, CIO’s interviewee, is
committed to running the kind of busi-
ness his father taught him to.
SERVICES
Way’s currently operates over 230
pieces of equipment in the province
of Newfoundland. The central hub is
the company’s yard, which is ready to
handle any job a customer needs do-
ing. Way’s is equipped with dry freight
vans, flatbeds, refrigerated units, con-
tainers, lowbeds, tankers, heavy equip-
ment, and semi-dumps. The shipment
terminal is 12,000 square feet, and is
capable of hosting up to 18 docked
trailers—it also has a built-in refrigera-
tion storage unit.
“My father has always had the
mindset to get the customer looked
after, no matter what, and he taught us
that,” Marvin Way tells CIO. “We’ve
learned over the years to diversify our
services. Now, we don’t just do freight,
we do transport for mining and oil and
gas, it’s not just services to the fisheries
anymore—it’s whatever our customer
wants to get done. We have been suc-
cessful this way in that we’ve been
able to reinvest into the business,” he
explains.
Over the years, Way’s has formed
partnerships with shipping lines to
move product overseas, as the com-
pany ventured into international
markets. “We have relationships with
trucking and shipping companies so
that we can chase business, and we
have, to Europe, the U.S., all the way
to Asia. We have partner container
companies, and maintain links with
airlines and other types of transporters
who go past our borders,” Way contin-
ues.
By diversifying, and partnering
with other companies in the business,
Way’s has been able to meet demand
outside Newfoundland for its services,
and has been able to do this whether
the fisheries business is up or down.
“Locally we’ve seen a spike—the
economy is doing better overall and
people are purchasing goods. We have
seen more business with our mining
and oil and gas customers, and have
done transport to remote sites. It’s in
the energy industry that these areas
are starting to resurge,” Way says.
