Competition for MTS is with bacteria-
based products on the market. How-
ever, MTS has been able to increase
viability of their product lines by ex-
panding into other applications be-
sides agriculture.
The company says that munici-
palities who have used their products
have seen dramatic results in their
wastewater treatment facilities, includ-
ing reductions in lagoon biosolids,
improved effluent quality and substan-
tial municipal cost savings.” MTS has
proven that their “natural alternative
to wastewater and biosolids treatment
can help municipalities reduce organic
solids, contaminants, and nutrients—
creating a healthier system that costs
less to operate.”
The numbers say it all. The MTS
wastewater treatment program has
been proven to digest and reduce bio-
solids accumulation in wastewater
treatment lagoons by up to 20 per cent
in a 12 month period. The program
helps remove toxic metals from waste-
water, maintains and/or improves
effluent quality, reduces odours and
gasses, reduces the need for chemi-
cals, and improves overall biological
growth in wastewater treatment sys-
tems.
According to MTS tests, a town
in Ontario with a population of 2,000
measured that solids were reduced by
approximately 35 per cent based on
volume. In the same period of mea-
surement, E. Coli levels were reduced
by up to 98 per cent. Today, MTS is
working with more than 20 municipal-
ities in Ontario to treat and maintain
lagoons, holding tanks, aerobic and
anaerobic digesters, and RBC units and
aeration tanks. Scott Thompson, MTS
Wastewater Treatment Consultant, has
said “We’ve found
that every municipal-
ity experiences differ-
ent issues depending
on variables such
as their operating
system, population,
unique businesses
in the area that raise
specific wastewa-
ter levels, foaming,
odours, nitrate levels,
and so on.” The com-
pany has committed
to helping each mu-
nicipality get it right,
for the good of the lo-
cal environment, and
population.
MTS Environmental has seen re-
ductions in foaming on aeration tanks,
increases in decantable supernate in
aerobic and anaerobic digesters, and
an accelerated breakdown of organ-
ics in aerobic digesters, meaning less
sludge needs to be transferred to hold-
ing tanks, land-applied, land-filled, or
incinerated.” This means that not only
is the product line viable in various
environments, it is inherently environ-
mentally-friendly: MTS products help
to break down sludge better, which
means there is less to transport.
Thompson says that the wastewa-
ter treatment side of the business keeps
growing, and the benefit to the envi-
ronment is visible. “By using our prod-
ucts, municipalities can reduce the
amount of sludge hauling from waste-
water treatment plants to holding facil-
ities, and then eventually to landfills—
where sludge always eventually goes,”
he explains. “From a product perspec-
tive and a carbon footprint standpoint
it is more environmentally-friendly all
around.”
