N THE HEART
of Hamilton,
AVL Group of Companies is
working to improve efficiency for their
customers: in energy, manufacturing,
and emergency management.
CIO had the unique opportunity
to meet with AVL’s principle, Vince
DiCristofaro, and Scott Maxwell, Vice
President of Business Development, to
tour the AVL facilities and get the lat-
est on the company’s development.
Even at first glance, AVL gives the im-
pression of a company much larger
than its size. The company operates
and innovates from headquarters
housing large bays where in a previous
time, some of the biggest machinery in
Canada was built.
EVOLUTION OF AVL
AVL Group of Companies began
as AVL Manufacturing. The company
originally focused on fabrication for
major customers around the world—
building some of the most unique
structures in the world.
The evolution of AVL is some-
thing remarkable. Starting with just
a handful of major jobs, DiCristofaro
worked on “one-off” contracts with his
team. The facility where most of those
jobs were done had to be transformed
into a “clean” facility to allow for the
best quality product. Now the AVL
team works to high standards of qual-
ity, in order to retain their name in the
Canadian marketplace.
Business was good in fabrica-
tion, but we moved away from just
doing singular projects and contracts,
because there just isn’t enough work
flow doing one-offs,” DiCristofaro re-
calls. “Today, everything we do is at a
more sophisticated technology.”
Maxwell, who is responsible for
AVL’s corporate reputation and build-
ing new business, says that AVL’s
strategy and mandate relies heavily
on the concept of constant innovation:
The innovation that we have now is
clean, fast, and top-of-the-line.”
DiCristofaro explains that the
company has always “wanted to be
known for innovation. Some of the
biggest machinery parts in North
America were manufactured here, but
this company was destined to be more
than one-offs.”
Seeing the potential of AVL, and
how the history behind the company
will drive innovation is easy when
you get to experience the company
first-hand. The magnitude of the estab-
lishment showcases the diverse capa-
bility that AVL has, as does the high-
tech equipment used and produced
by AVL. For instance: the company’s
ground-breaking ONEPOWER unit,
and their newest endeavour ECO-H.
