leader in Dye Solar Cell (DSC) technology,
was formed in 2004 in order to commercialize DSC technology
that was being developed by STI, Greatcell Solar and EPFL. Since its
early days, the technology has been integrated into a range of
commercial product solutions, and Dyesol looks to expand DSC’s po-
tential. According to the Dyesol website DSC technology is “‘artificial
photosynthesis’, using an electrolyte, a layer of titania (a pigment used
in white paints and tooth paste) and ruthenium dye sandwiched
between glass. Light striking the dye excites electrons which are
absorbed by the titania to become an electric current many times
stronger than that found in natural photosynthesis in plants.”
