GLOBAL RENEWABLES ONLINE - FEBRUARY / MARCH 2012
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The 12MW Wonthaggi Wind Farm is
located 3 km west of Wonthaggi in Victoria.
Situated only 1 km from the coast, the wind
farm is ideally located to take advantage of
the strong winds from Bass Straight.
The site was first identified as a potential
wind farm due to its strong wind resource,
proximity to the electricity grid and relative
distance to existing houses. As part of the
planning process, detailed environmental
and cultural heritage studies were
undertaken which determined that there
would be no significant impact as a result of
the wind farm.
Built in 2005, the turbines are located on
a single property that is primarily used
for cattle grazing. The entire wind farm
infrastructure takes up less than 1% of the
land area, allowing the existing farming
practices to continue as they were prior to
construction.
To ensure the turbines are operating at peak
performance, the turbines are serviced
regularly by REpower service technicians,
most of which live in the local area.
