GLOBAL RENEWABLES ONLINE - DECEMBER 2011
W
hen you think about renewable energy, what
comes to mind—a wind turbine, a solar panel,
maybe a green leaf or clear blue sky? These images we have
of a utopian environment definitely represent the possibil-
ity of a cleaner, more sustainable world. However, when it
comes to sustainable business development there is so
much more to consider.
For businesses, implementing sustainable practices doesn’t
necessarily mean a sea change in the organization. At every level
of business, setting goals for sustainability is the first step—and
that can be a small change (initiating a recycling program), to
revamping how the organization values its environmental and
community impacts. These things take time. They take money.
But with the buy-in of corporations at large, and the individuals
that make up those corporations, the world can change.
Companies today are thinking much more long-term than ever
before, considering environmental aspects of operations, and
looking at changing the way they do business to lessen their
environmental footprint. In Global Renewables Online, we will
share with you every month stories of businesses that are doing
something a little different to help customers or clients operate
more sustainably. For instance, a mining services company
(traditionally an industry with a major environmental impact)
might develop a device that increases the efficiency of a mine,
decreasing energy use. We encounter companies every day that
are developing technologies that widen the possible scope for
applications of renewable energy, and companies that by
incorporate sustainable practices into their value proposition.
GRO will contribute to the dialogue on sustainability, because
while some have said that mitigating environmental risks is now
second-hand for many corporations, there is still a long way to go.
