CANADIAN INDUSTRY ONLINE - JANUARY 2012
COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENT PLAN
In January 2008, the City of
Elliot Lake contracted a planning
firm to complete a Community
Improvement Plan (CIP) for the City’s
commercial areas. The draft plan
was reviewed at a public meeting on
June 23, 2008 and was passed with
amendments on July 28, 2008. The
CIP took effect on August 21, 2008.
The Community Improvement
Plan allows the City of Elliot Lake to
provide various financial incentives
to commercial business owners and
landlords to make improvements to
their buildings and properties.
Under Elliot Lake’s CIP, these
incentives are geared to visible
improvements including facades,
landscaping and signage for
buildings within the downtown core
and the south industrial area. The
Community Improvement Plan is
supplemented by Urban Design
Guidelines and a Public Space
Vision Document.
The purpose of the CIP is to
create an interesting and inviting
area that supports sidewalk
activities - such as window shopping
- while expressing business individ-
uality and preserving architectural
heritage. The incentives for busi-
nesses are not meant to brand the
community or suppress diversity
and limit creativity, but to create a
diverse yet unified municipal
appearance
