CANADIAN INDUSTRY ONLINE - FEBRUARY / MARCH 2012
tidal, these are all part of our
answer to the energy equation.
We want to unchain ourselves
from the fossil fuel markets.
CIO: What can you envision as the
peripheral benefits to these types
of projects?
DD: The best example of the
benef its to local communities is
the partnership with Daewoo
Shipbuilding and Marine Engi-
neering, with the establishment
of DSTN Trenton. This company
is creating green jobs, all part of
a new industry.
CIO: What are the next steps for
Lower Churchill?
DD: There is a lot of work to be
done for the regulatory side. Next
is the development of each of the
aspects of the project.
CIO: How is the province tackling
skills development?
DD: Our Community college
corridor is very important. If you
want to grow your GDP you have
to skill your workforce. We need
to keep our young people in
Atlantic Canada, and entice
people to come back. We need to
bring people in to strengthen our
population base. A great example
is Lower Churchill. Even though
it is centered in Newfoundland
and Labrador, it is a wonderful
opportunity for Nova Scotia
workers. It is much easier to go
work in Goose Bay and come
back home than it is to go to
Alberta.
Atlantic Canada has really
become a great environment for
opportunity. What you see is a
tremendously skilled workforce
bolstered by great universities
and colleges, all of which are
growing and strengthening the
economy.
What you see is a tremendously ski l led
workforce bolstered by great universi t ies and
col leges, al l of which are growing and
strengthening the economy.”
