CANADIAN INDUSTRY ONLINE - FEBRUARY / MARCH 2012
CIO: What would you say were the
catalysts for this recent trend in
upward growth for the Atlantic
Provinces?
Premier Darrell Dexter: The
good news announcements start-
ed with the Lower Churchill
project, followed up with the
national Shipyard Procurement
Strategy. Also recently announced
was Shell’s $1 billion investment
in our offshore. These very large
projects have brought a sense of
optimism for the economy. We
want to continue to promote our
innovative
industries.
Nova
Scotia is well placed for economy
growth, and I’m told by our
business communities that there
is an abundance of access to
capital, which is a departure from
the last few years. Usually, our
businesses f ind it diff icult to
secure investors.
CIO: Why do you think the general
business climate is more positive,
in addition to these major projects
going on? What are outsiders
seeing in Atlantic Canada?
DD: I believe there is a greater
appreciation of our assets. We
have incredible universities,
research facilities, including the
CIO had the privilege of
speaking with Nova Scotia
Premier Darrell Dexter,
whilst he was travelling the
eastern provinces, visiting
various businesses and
continuing to promote the
benefits of the Nova Scotia
business landscape. Dexter
spoke highly of the capacity
of entrepreneurs and small
business on the East coast—
and it’s no wonder, as the
economy grows and
employment rises.
Additionally, our
provinces are quickly
growing our aerospace
and defense industries.”
