CANADIAN INDUSTRY ONLINE - OCTOBER 2014
PH:
We have a young and com-
mitted group here that love the organi-
zation and love the energy of the festi-
val. We all understand and appreciate
the value of having an impact on peo-
ple’s lives—this festival reaches every
single continent.
Our staff are passionate not just
about film but about making a differ-
ence. Understanding the mission of the
festival: transforming the way people
see the world through film, that is
what our team is passionate about.
Our programming has really
changed and it’s great. The children’s
programming has grown and it is such
a great event complimenting the other
great programming we have. TIFF also
works with community groups and
under serviced communities.
Everyone here feels that this is a
business, but in drive and operations.
The difference is that the money that
comes into TIFF goes back into pro-
gramming and is reinvested into the
great work done here: we are not about
maximizing the bottom line.

How has the volunteer pro-
gram improved and how important
has that been?
PH:
Without our volunteers we
wouldn’t be here. We have put lots of
resources into our volunteers for good
reason. We’ve really increased what
volunteers get out of the programs,
and that means rewarding them for
everything they do. Without our vol-
unteers we would require many more
paid positions, which, as everyone
in non-profit and arts organizations
know, is not usually possible.
