CANADIAN INDUSTRY ONLINE - NOVEMBER 2012
address worker shortage on a commu-
nity, and provincial level?
TL:
As the mayor, along with the
CEO of our Economic Development
Committee, I try to do 30-40 business
visits a year, from meeting with min-
ing companies to small mom and pop
shops. This gives me a sense of the
community and our challenges and
opportunities—this includes shortages
in certain skills. We need to take ad-
vantage of the multicultural nature of
our community and the great workers
that we train at our educational insti-
tutions.
CIO:
What are the plusses
for businesses that root them-
selves in Timmins?
TL:
Our location, our
modern airport are important. We
have a great highway network, and a
good rail system.
Our people are hardwork-
ing and friendly. We have good
infrastructure, telecommunica-
tions. But also, it’s the aspects
outside of business that are a
draw: going fishing, to the cot-
tage, the quality of life is great.
We know our mineral resources
will be very much in demand going
forward, and these will carry our com-
munity. But I think you will see some
diversification in our industry, I think
you’re going to see some great things
out of Timmins in terms of science and
education, these will be very much in
the forefront for the 20, 30, 40 years.
