What is NRCan’s relation-
ship with industry?
GM
:
Within the forest sector
there is a lot of collaboration between
the government and private sector.
Crisis drives people to action and in
the last decade it’s been very hard for
the forestry sector that has led to close
engagement between stakeholders.
We have been collectively working on
issues that affect the forest sector in the
short term and long term.

What role does training and
education play in improving the for-
estry sector?
C
IO has recently
been
investigating Canada’s forest
sector and the industries associated
with manufacturing in this area. We
spoke with Natural Resources Cana-
da, specifically Glenn Mason, Assis-
tant Deputy Minister, National Capital
Region, Canadian Forest Service to
discuss Canada’s forest sector.
CIO:
What is the Canadian For-
est Service and Natural Resources
Canada’s broad reaching mandate
when it comes to supporting forestry
in Canada?
Glenn Mason:
Natural Resourc-
es Canada is investing in science and
programs that promote the innovation
and development of various forestry
markets. This sector has been hit hard
in Canada and so we are promoting
initiatives and innovations in particu-
larly in forest products. This sector in
Canada has been dealing with serious
issues like climate change and infesta-
tions—specifically the pine beetle.
