the original beauty and character of
these buildings and have the experi-
ence and know how to do the work
efficiently and correctly.”
Martin says that because restora-
tions is not a mainstay for the busi-
ness, the company is definitely into
residential,
institutional
and commer-
cial/industrial
work, with
business for
Martin De-
velopments
being 60-40 in
commercial
work. One
of the com-
pany’s most
notable city
projects was an extensive renovation
to the Council Chambers of Halifax
Regional Municipality which included
a complete recessed lighting system,
intricately detailed mouldings and
panel work, new flooring, wiring and
an amazing custom entrance system
created by the company’s mastercrafts-
man.
COMMITMENT TO CUSTOMER CARE
The company has been active and
successful building, renovating, restor-
ing, and managing construction proj-
ects through constant customer care.
Today, the company’s website reflects
its tradition of personal customer ser-
vice: “We believe in developing rela-
tionships with everyone involved in
our projects. By having each individual
feel like part of a team, we are able to
create an environment where everyone
puts their best effort into achieving
a common
goal.” This
collabora-
tive approach
includes the
customer,
suppliers,
and team
members.
Everyone is
working to-
wards one
goal, and that
outlook has
sustained Martin Developments.
Construction in a small market
can be a very tough business to scratch
out, especially in a market where it
is very hard to find skilled trades-
people,” Martin explains. “So we align
ourselves with the best in the industry
and we know what our people can do.
We have great relationships with our
subcontractors (electrical, plumbing)
and have for as long as we’ve had the
business.”
The experience brought to a proj-
ect by the Martin Developments team
is second-to-none. “If we haven’t seen
it, it probably hasn’t been done,” Mar-
tin adds.
Furthermore, Martin Develop-
ments has the resources to call upon
if the company is in unfamiliar build-
ing territory. “If we don’t know the
answers, we have access to someone
who does know the answers,” Martin
says. The most important thing for
the company is to be upfront with the
customer. “We always explain the po-
tential for unseen costs. We want to
make sure we’re upfront about what
those could be because I’d much rather
lose that job than have a client that is
extremely unsatisfied with the work
we’ve done.”
As the company grows, it will
continue to delve into institutional and
commercial projects, in what Martin
calls a “pretty vibrant economy.” Mar-
tin Developments has a clear commit-
ment to safety as members of the Nova
Scotia Construction Safety Association,
and trains all employees to the highest
standards.
With a reputation for being hon-
est, and offering quality at every level,
the team will likely have a busy sum-
mer/fall season. “We don’t sell on be-
ing the cheapest full service contractor
out there; we sell on what we have al-
ways promised: that we stand behind
what we do.”
