RYERSON’S CUE—PROGRESSIVE
URBAN ENERGY STUDY
On September 1st, 2010, Ryerson
University announced the creation of
the Centre for Urban Energy (CUE), a
research and technology demonstra-
tion centre “devoted to the discovery
and commercialization of innovative,
practical solutions to urban energy is-
sues.”
The CUE, over the course of the
last two years, has brought together
researchers, government, and indus-
tries in Canada and beyond to study
urban energy. According to the launch
press release, the Centre’s goals are to
combine engineering, science, envi-
ronment, business, and infrastructure
management to tackle immediate chal-
lenges such as development of clean
energy technologies; energy conserva-
tion and demand management; alter-
native local energy generation; energy
storage; carbon footprint reduction;
and smart/adaptable infrastructure…
to help develop solutions to these and
other challenges for urban centres
around the world.”
Funding for the Centre comes
from Hydro One, the Toronto Hydro-
Electric System Limited, and the On-
tario Power Authority.
CIO is pleased to share updates
and articles from this unique Centre.

URBAN ENERGY FOCUSED
BUSINESS INCUBATOR
The Innovation Centre for Urban
Energy opens doors with four compa-
nies
On November 16th, Ryerson Uni-
versity launched the Innovation Centre
for Urban Energy (i-CUE), Canada’s
first business incubator and accelerator
devoted solely to urban energy.
Housed at the Centre for Urban
Energy (CUE), the i-CUE is focused on
research innovation (applied research
in collaboration with industry); busi-
ness innovation (entrepreneurship);
and student innovation (experiential
learning), all within the energy sector.
Its goal is to help new energy compa-
nies turn their ideas into commercial
products, services and/or technolo-
gies.
The i-CUE is aimed at the por-
tion of the innovation process where
ideation and technology development
converge. The energy industry needs
entrepreneurs, but ones that know
how to navigate this regulated sector.
This is where the i-CUE comes in,”
explains Dan McGillivray, executive
director of the CUE.
The Centre for Urban Energy
has been successful in conducting
