CANADIAN INDUSTRY ONLINE - AUGUST 2014
A
TRULY CANADI AN
legacy: almost 135 years of operations, through
booms and busts and everything in between. Imperial Oil, the country’s
second largest oil and gas producer, is the country’s oldest—and has explored,
developed and operated to serve millions of customers and provide the materi-
als necessary for a vast array of consumer products.
What better way to celebrate over 100 years of Alberta oil and gas, than to
talk to the company that has served as the very foundation for a provincial com-
munity?
Imperial was built on a tradition of entrepreneurialism—a trait that still
permeates Imperial from workers operating in the oil sands to the company’s
management team and board of directors. Imperial’s operations may not be
intimately known in every Canadian household, but its brands: Esso and Mobil,
certainly are.
In 2013, Imperial had operating revenues of almost $33 billion, and pro-
duced 295,000 oil-equivalent barrels per day. It is estimated that Canadians rely
on Imperial for 20 per cent of their fuel needs. What’s more notable in the con-
text of historical energy development in Alberta however, is what the company
spends every year on its operations: in
2013
Imperial had $8.0 billion in capi-
tal expenditures.
Alberta, as currently one of the
only “have” provinces in Canada, sees
tremendous social, economic, and in-
frastructure capital invested by Impe-
rial. The company is committed to op-
erating responsibly. But what’s more,
Imperial translates that commitment
into dollars into communities—and
has for over a century.
