by Lee Mc-
Donald, Southmedic provides
innovative healthcare products to na-
tional and international markets.
The company, which is privately-
owned, aims to improve the quality of
care for patients who are the end-users
of Southmedic’s efforts.
The company is equipped with
some of the brightest minds in R&D,
and this began with Lee McDonald
herself. “When the company started,
there were no instruments like the
ones that Southmedic now offers to the
health care system,” Director of Manu-
facturing Alan Dwyer comments.

T
he proprietary technology of
Southmedic’s Vapofil and AntiSpil
help health care providers mitigate
the risks of incorrect anesthetic ad-
ministration. The Vapofil and AntiSpil
devices allow for safe storage and
transfer of anesthetic agent from bottle
to vaporizer. The difference between
these devices and anything else previ-
ously on the market: they are colour
coded with a keyed cap that will only
fit the correct corresponding anesthetic
bottle for certain agents.
Back when the company was
founded there was the potential to
administer the wrong anesthetic agent,
so McDonald developed a device that
would prevent this from happening,”
Dwyer notes. “Our devices are mitigat-
ing the risk of delivering the wrong
substance to a patient. This company
has been very much a pioneer in this
area.”
In addition to Vapofil, the com-
pany created AntiSpil. The AntiSpil’s
function is precisely as it sounds: a
pour spout ensures that the transfer of
anesthetic agent goes into a funnel fill
vaporizer with no drips or spills. Both
versions of these devices have an anti-
pollution plug to prevent unwanted
spillage or waste during storage.
We’re always looking to identify a need that’s not met.”
